After establishing the importance of trust in institutions for democracy, this paper makes a brief diagnosis of the relationship of citizens with the police both at the national level and in the state of Jalisco in the period between 2011 and 2020 using data from the National Survey of Victimization and Perception of Public Safety (ENVIPE). Once the evolution in the proposed period has been analyzed and the similarities and differences in the cases analyzed have been assessed, some ways are proposed to improve citizens' confidence in the police, understood as a two-dimensional construct that includes both the perception of efficiency and the perception commitment to the community, with a primary focus on the procedural justice model.
