Abstract

The main idea of this document is to reveal how the design of public policies have influenced the social backwardness of indigenous people for decades. It is vitally important to understand the reasons why the development of indigenous communities have not taken off and the rejection indigenous people express to the idea of assimilation. As well as knowing the areas of opportunity to improve in which the State must pay attention in order to reduce the inequality gap in which indigenous people find themselves in our country.

Statistical data are presented, allowing us to diagnose the conditions of poverty and the inequality of opportunity for this segment of the population. The principle of equality and non-discrimination, as well as the challenges faced by authorities in designing public policies, is reviewed.
